HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. Â Coastal Carolina University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2004-05 athletic season. The award is the school’s seventh award and third in the past five years. The Cup was presented to CCU Thursday evening at the League’s annual Spring Meetings Hall of Fame Dinner at The Westin Resort Hilton Head Island.
The award, named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is given to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on a points system. In 2004-05, Coastal accumulated 170 points based on its finish in Conference championships, winning by 8.5 points over second-place Liberty University. In earning this year’s award, the Chanticleers won Big South titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer (tournament), football, women’s golf, men’s golf, women’s outdoor track and baseball (regular-season).
Liberty finished second in the Sasser Cup race for the second-straight season, with Winthrop University, Birmingham-Southern College and High Point University rounding out the top five finishers.
The Flames won its second-straight Men’s All-Sports Trophy with 84.5 points, ahead of Coastal’s 77 points. CCU claimed its second-consecutive women’s All-Sports Trophy with 93 points, 16 points ahead of Liberty. The final standings for the Sasser Cup and All-Sports Trophies appear below.
