HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University has mathematically won the 2005-06 Big South Conference George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy and the League’s women’s and men’s All-Sports awards.  The League officially presented the awards to Coastal Carolina Friday night, May 19, as part of the Conference’s Hall of Fame Dinner celebration at The Westin Resort.

Despite the Big South baseball season still in competition.  Coastal Carolina, with its current 181.75 total points, owns a 38.25 point lead over second-place Winthrop (143.50) and 40.75 point lead over third-place Liberty (141.00) to win its third-straight Sasser Cup Trophy and eighth overall.

The Lady Chanticleers captured its third consecutive women’s All-Sports award as well, as CCU won the softball regular-season title and last week’s Conference tournament to finish with 108.50 points.  Liberty was second with 88.50 and Winthrop was third with 83.50.  Rounding out the final women’s sports standings were High Point (64.50), Radford (61), Birmingham-Southern (60), UNC Asheville (48), Charleston Southern (45) and VMI (11.50).

On the men’s side, Coastal is 13.25 points ahead of Winthrop (60) entering the final weekend of baseball, but earns the men’s award over the Eagles, as Winthrop’s potential point total for baseball (15) is not enough to overtake the Chanticleers -- Coastal will collect enough points to win by at least 3.25 points.  Radford is third in the men’s race with 59.50 points.  Following the May 24-27 Bojangles’ Big South Baseball Championship presented by PUPS/PDPS, the final Sasser Cup and men’s All-Sports point totals and standings will be determined.

The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on a points system.  Points are awarded based on both regular-season and tournament finish in each of the League’s 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively.  There shall be a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both.  Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play shall split the points earned.
