HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2006-07 athletic season, its fourth consecutive title.  The award is the school’s ninth award and fifth in the past seven years.  The Cup was presented to CCU Thursday evening at the League’s annual Spring Meetings Hall of Fame Dinner at The Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island.

In 2006-07, Coastal averaged 10.50 points and accumulated a total of 178.50 points based on its finish in Conference championships, winning by just 0.24 over second-place Winthrop University.  The Chanticleers won Big South championships in football, women’s indoor track, men’s golf, women’s tennis (tournament) and baseball (regular-season and tournament) and finished runner-up in five Conference championships as well.

Winthrop finished second in the Sasser Cup race with a 10.26 average and totaled 174.50 points, four overall points behind Coastal.  Liberty was third at 9.62, followed by High Point (7.88) and Radford (7.29).

The Eagles earned its first Men’s All-Sports Trophy with its average of 10.63 (85 points overall), edging out Coastal Carolina’s 10.38 average (83 points overall).  Winthrop won regular-season and tournanent championships in men’s soccer and men’s basketball, and tied for the regular-season men’s tennis crown.  The Eagles also finished runner-up in men’s golf.  Liberty was third in the Men’s All-Sports race with its 8.94 average.

Coastal Carolina won its fourth consecutive Women’s All-Sports Trophy, finishing with an average of 10.61 points and 98.5 overall points.  Liberty was second with an average of 10.38 (83 points), followed by Winthrop at 9.94 (89.5 points).

The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on an average points system.  Overall points are awarded based on both regular-season and tournament finish in each of the League’s 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively.  There shall be a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both.  Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play shall split the points earned.  Once all point totals have been compiled, they are divided by the total number of Conference championship sports sponsored by the institution.  The final 2006-07 results appear below.
