CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Winthrop University has been declared the winner of the 2010-11 Big South Conference Kallander Cup Challenge for its efforts in collecting more than 1,200 pounds of soap and personal care products towards the more than one-and-a-half tons received for Soap for Souls, a Conference-wide initiative.

This past season, the Conference's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) adopted Soap for Souls as its Community Service Challenge and collected a total of 3,374.85 pounds of soap and toiletry items that will be donated to local charities and shelters.  Each Big South member institution's SAAC collected travel-sized soap and other personal care products at various on-campus athletic events and Conference championships throughout the year.  Gardner-Webb finished second with 935 pounds collected, followed by Charleston Southern with 600 pounds.

Winthrop, which won the Kallander Cup in 2008-09 and 2009-10, was presented the award during the Big South's sixth annual Leadership Conference, which was held July 22-24 in Black Mountain, N.C.  This year's event featured 49 student-athletes from around the Conference, and focused on developing leadership skills and challenging the participants to return to their respective campuses and lead their fellow student-athletes.

The Big South Conference SAAC created the Kallander Cup in 2006-07 to engage student-athletes from all Big South member institutions in a year-long fundraising competition for the benefit of a selected charity.  Past beneficiaries include the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Samaritan's Feet and local school systems.  The Big South member institution that raises the most funds and/or donations annually is awarded the Kallander Cup at the end of the year.  Past winners of the Kallander Cup are Liberty University (2007, 2008) and Winthrop (2009, 2010).
