Liberty Wins 2012-13 Big South Sasser Cup Trophy
HOT SPRINGS, Va. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Liberty University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2012-13 athletic season, its Conference-record sixth consecutive title and 11th overall. The Cup was presented to Liberty Thursday evening at the League’s annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner, which was held at The Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Va. Liberty is the first member institution to win six consecutive Sasser Cups and its 11 overall championships is a Big South record.
In 2012-13, Liberty averaged 13.56 Sasser Cup points in 18 championship sports and accumulated a total of 244 points based on its finish in Conference championships. The Flames won 12 Big South championships in 2012-13 -- three regular-season titles and nine tournament crowns. Liberty won the regular-season title in women’s basketball and volleyball and shared the regular-season crown in football, while claiming the Conference tournament championship in men’s and women’s cross country, volleyball, men’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and baseball.
Coastal Carolina finished second to Liberty again this season with a 12.91 average in 18 sports and totaled 232.5 points. For the fourth time in five years, High Point was third in the Sasser Cup standings (11.53 average), and was followed by Campbell (10.29) and Charleston Southern (9.20).
The Chanticleers earned the Men’s All-Sports Trophy with its average of 13.94 (111.5 points overall in eight sports), edging out the Flames’ 13.17 average (118.5 points overall in nine sports). Coastal Carolina won three regular-season titles, one division crown and two tournament championships in men’s competition to win its first Men’s All-Sports Trophy since 2010-11 and fourth overall. High Point was third in the Men’s All-Sports race with its 12.21 average (85.5 total points in seven sports).
Liberty claimed the Women’s All-Sports Trophy for the fourth consecutive year and fifth time in six seasons with its average of 13.94 (125.5 points overall in nine sports), ahead of Coastal Carolina’s 12.10 average (121 points overall in 10 sports). Liberty won a combined six regular-season and tournament titles in women’s competition to win its fifth overall Women’s All-Sports Trophy. High Point was third in the Women’s All-Sports race with its 10.94 average (87.5 total points in eight sports).
The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League’s 19 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 points for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Each member’s point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
