Coastal Carolina Defeats Radford to Win Men's Soccer Championship - Nov. 16
GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 2 Coastal Carolina defeated No. 1 Radford, 1-0, in the title game of the 2014 Big South Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday afternoon at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. Coastal receives the Big South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship in winning its second consecutive championship. The Chanticleers have now won 12 Big South men’s soccer titles, and three in the last five years.
Sergio Camargo provided the lone goal of the match in the 51st minute on a shot to the left upper corner of the net. Defensive Player of the Year Shawn McLaws was credited with the assist on the tally after a cross into the box. Radford had a flurry of chances in the game’s final minutes but could not put one past Chanticleers keeper Devin Cook-Perales.

The Coastal defense held the Highlanders without a shot or corner kick in the first half. In the second half, however, Radford recorded eight shots and eight corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net. The Chanticleers finished the match with a 12-8 advantage in shots, while Radford had eight corner kicks to Coastal’s three.
Jordan Tyler led Coastal Carolina with three shots, while Camargo, Ricky Garbanzo and Ridge Robinson each recorded two. Krzysztof Nalborski and Chel Ho Park Kim led Radford with two shots apiece.
Cook-Perales made two saves for Coastal Carolina, while Aitor Pouseu Blanco made four saves for Radford. Each keeper played the game’s full 90 minutes.
Coastal center back Uchenna Uzo was named the Big South Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Sergio Camargo, Ricky Garbanzo and Shawn McLaws. Aitor Pouseu Blanco, Jo Vetle Rimstad and Felix Steinhauser from Radford made the squad. Joining them were Austin Yearwood and Mamadee Nyepon of High Point, Pat Barnes and Jordi Lluch of Winthrop, Daniel Campos from Longwood, Campbell’s Bryce Miller, Liberty’s Tim Harbison and Paul Egle of UNC Asheville.
Coastal Carolina improved to 15-5-1 on the season, while Radford fell to 12-5-3.
