Coastal Carolina Wins 2013-14 Sasser Cup Trophy, All-Sports Awards
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Coastal Carolina University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2013-14 athletic season, its first Sasser Cup since 2006-07 and 10th overall, which is the second-most in League history. The Cup was presented to Coastal Carolina Thursday evening at the League’s annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner, which was held at The Marriott Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
In 2013-14, Coastal Carolina averaged 13.54 Sasser Cup points in 18 championship sports and accumulated a total of 243.75 points based on its finish in Conference championships. The Chanticleers won eight Big South championships in 2013-14 -- three regular-season titles and five tournament crowns. Coastal Carolina won the regular-season title in men’s soccer, softball and shared the championship in football, while claiming the Conference tournament championship in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s indoor track & field and women’s outdoor track & field.
High Point finished second to Coastal Carolina this season with a 13.00 average in 15 sports and totaled 195 points -- the Panthers’ highest-ever finish in the Sasser Cup race. Liberty, which had its run of six consecutive Sasser Cups end this year, was third in the standings (12.82 average), and was followed by Campbell (10.86) and Winthrop (10.53).
The Chanticleers earned the Men’s All-Sports Trophy for the second-straight year and fifth time overall with its average of 13.53 (108.25 points overall in eight sports), ahead of the Flames’ 12.64 average (113.75 points overall in nine sports). Coastal Carolina won two regular-season titles, one division crown and two tournament championships in men’s competition to win the Men’s All-Sports Trophy. High Point was third in the Men’s All-Sports race with its 12.50 average (87.5 total points in seven sports).
Coastal claimed the Women’s All-Sports Trophy for the first time since 2008-09 and Big South-record sixth time overall with its average of 13.55 (135.5 points overall in 10 sports), edging out High Point’s 13.44 average (107.5 points overall in eight sports). The Chanticleers won one regular-season and three tournament titles in women’s competition to capture the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. Liberty was third in the Women’s All-Sports race with its 13.00 average (117 total points in nine sports).
The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League’s 19 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively. There is a weighted factor of 1.5 points for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Each member’s point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
