HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Coastal Carolina University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2014-15 athletic season, marking the school’s second consecutive Sasser Cup and 11th overall -- tied for the most in League history.  The Cup was presented to Coastal Carolina Thursday evening at the League’s annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner, which was held at The Marriott Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

In 2014-15, Coastal Carolina averaged 9.42 Sasser Cup points in 18 championship sports and accumulated a total of 169.50 points based on its finish in Conference championships in addition to two at-large NCAA berths.  The Chanticleers won eight Big South championships in 2014-15 -- three regular-season titles and five tournament crowns.  Coastal Carolina won the regular-season title in men’s tennis and shared the championship in football and women’s tennis, while claiming the Conference tournament championship in men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s indoor track & field and women’s golf.

Liberty, which has also won 11 Sasser Cups, finished second to Coastal Carolina this season with a 9.06 average in 18 sports and totaled 163 points -- marking the closest Sasser Cup finish (0.36) since 2006-07.  High Point was third in the standings (8.38 average), and was followed by Radford (7.55) and Campbell (7.35).  The Panthers posted their fifth consecutive top three finish, while the Highlanders notched their best standing since finishing fourth in 2008-09.

The Lady Flames claimed the Women’s All-Sports Trophy for the fifth time in six years and Big South record-tying sixth time overall with its average of 9.67 (87 points earned in nine sports), ahead of Coastal Carolina’s 9.23 average (92.25 points earned in 10 sports).  Liberty won two regular-season and two tournament titles in women’s competition to capture the Women’s All-Sports Trophy.  High Point was third in the Women’s All-Sports race with its 8.69 average (69.5 points earned in eight sports).

The Chanticleers won the Men’s All-Sports Trophy for the third-straight year and sixth time overall with its average of 9.66 (77.25 points earned in eight sports), ahead of the Flames’ 8.44 average (76 points earned in nine sports).  Coastal Carolina won two regular-season titles and two tournament championships in men’s competition to win the Men’s All-Sports Trophy.  Winthrop was third in the Men’s All-Sports race with its 8.22 average (65.75 points earned in eight sports).

The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system.  Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League’s 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport.  Teams selected for at-large NCAA berths receive one bonus point added to their average total in that sport.  Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned.  Each member’s overall point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
