Big South Unveils 2017-18 Women's Basketball League Schedule
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Big South Conference unveiled its 2017-18 women’s basketball composite league schedule Friday morning. The 90-game double-round robin slate over a nine-week period begins on Tuesday, Jan. 2 with all 10 teams in action, and each member will play an 18-game schedule as part of the league’s Tuesday-Saturday format that has been in place since 2014-15.
Schedule highlights include Charleston Southern at Liberty in the second league game of the year on Jan. 6 -- the site of the Buccaneers’ 52-50 win over the Lady Flames in the 2017 Big South Quarterfinals for CSU’s first-ever victory over Liberty in the conference tournament. Saturday, Jan. 9, features the 2017 Big South Championship rematch between two-time defending champion UNC Asheville at last year’s regular-season champion and tournament runner-up Radford. The return game will be Feb. 6 in Asheville, N.C.
The Big South’s two all-time win leaders for league games -- Liberty’s Carey Green (248) and Gardner-Webb’s Rick Reeves (144) -- will go head-to-head Saturday, Jan. 13 and Tuesday, Feb. 6. Also this season, Green is slated to coach his 300th Big South game on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the Lady Flames host UNC Asheville, while Reeves will coach his 250th Big South contest on Saturday, Jan. 20 at home vs. Charleston Southern. In addition, Saturday, Jan. 13 will be the 100th league game for Charleston Southern’s Fred Applin, High Point’s DeUnna Hendrix, Longwood’s Bill Reinson and UNC Asheville’s Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick.
High Point carries the conference’s longest active regular-season Big South win streak into the season at four games, while Radford owns the league’s active win streak for home conference victories at 12 dating back to 2015-16. The Highlanders open their Big South season at home on Tuesday, Jan. 2 against Winthrop.
The Big South sent a record four programs to the postseason a year ago, had multiple 20-win programs for the eighth consecutive season, and posted a win over a Power 5 conference during the regular-season.
The 2018 Big South Women’s Basketball Championship will again be a four-day event held Thursday-Sunday, March 8-11 at the Vines Center in Lynchburg, Va. Two first round games open the Championship on March 8 and will be broadcast on the Big South Network/Roku, followed by the quarterfinals (March 9), semifinals (March 10) and finals (March 11) on ESPN3.
