Campbell Tops 2019 Men's Tennis Preseason Poll
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Defending Big South men’s tennis champion Campbell University has been voted the preseason favorite in the annual Big South Conference preseason poll by the league’s head coaches, the conference office announced Wednesday.
The Camels, which won their first Big South men’s tennis crown since rejoining the conference in 2011-12, narrowly earned the top spot in the 2019 poll with 72 points and two first-place votes. Winthrop, last year’s Tournament Runner-Up to CU, was second in the preseason ranking with 71 points and five first-place votes, while Gardner-Webb was third with 57 points and one first-place vote.
Longwood finished fourth with 49 points, just ahead of Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville, which tied for fifth-place with 45 points each. New Big South member USC Upstate (29 points) landed in the seventh spot, just ahead of Radford (28 points and the remaining first-place vote). New member Hampton was voted ninth with nine points to round out the predicted order of finish.
The 2019 Big South men’s tennis season begins this Saturday, Jan. 12 with Winthrop and Presbyterian in action. The 2019 Big South Men’s Tennis Championship is slated for April 17-20 at the Radford Tennis Complex on the campus of Radford University in Radford, Va.
