2019 Women's Basketball Championship Seedings Finalized
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The seedings and pairings for next week’s Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Championship have been determined following the conclusion of the conference’s regular-season schedule today.
2019 Bracket
Radford, which is the host of the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of Pod A in the 2019 Big South Women’s Basketball Championship, claimed its second regular-season conference title in the last three seasons and will be the No. 1 seed in the annual event. The Highlanders, which earned their seventh title in program history, enter the postseason on a 15-game winning streak and a 17-1 conference record, and is in search of its 10th Big South crown.
High Point closed the regular season with a 15-3 conference record and will host the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of Pod B of the Big South Championship as the No. 2 seed. The Panthers have won their last seven games and 12 of their last 13 with their only setback coming in double overtime to Radford. HPU seeks its first Big South tournament title in program history.
In its first season in the Big South,
Hampton is the No. 3 seed with a 12-6 league mark. The Lady Pirates finished a game ahead of
UNC Asheville, which claimed the No. 4 seed with an 11-7 conference record. The Bulldogs have played in the Big South Championship title game the last three seasons.
Gardner-Webb and
Campbell tied for fifth place with identical 10-8 conference records. The Runnin’ Bulldogs and the Camels split during the regular season, and the next tie break was record against teams at the top of the standings on down. With no advantage against the top three finishers, GWU received the No. 5 seed based on its 1-0 record against UNC Asheville, while CU is the No. 6 seed after finishing 1-1.
Charleston Southern claimed the No. 7 seed with an even 9-9 conference mark, while
Winthrop earned the No. 8 seed at 6-12. The Bucs and Eagles join Campbell as first round hosts in this year’s Championship.
Presbyterian College is the No. 9 seed,
USC Upstate claimed the No. 10 seed, while
Longwood will be the No. 11 seed, as all three teams will start their Championship campaigns on the road in the first round.
First round action begins Tuesday night, March 12 at 7:00pm with No. 6 Campbell hosting No. 11 Longwood, No. 7 Charleston Southern hosting No. 10 USC Upstate and No. 8 Winthrop hosting No. 9 Presbyterian College. The winners of each contest advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal round, which begins at 6:00pm at Radford’s Dedmon Center and High Point’s Millis Center. Both schools will host semifinal action on Friday while the highest remaining seed will host the championship game on Sunday, March 17 at 2:00pm.
The first two rounds of the 2019 Big South Women’s Basketball Championship will be broadcast live on ESPN3, while the semifinals and championship game will air on ESPN+. The Big South’s Tournament champion receives an automatic big to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:
