USC Upstate Opens Men's Tennis Championship with 4-0 Victory over Hampton

Radford, Va. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team began postseason play in impressive fashion on Wednesday morning as the eighth-seeded Spartans swept the No. 9 seed Hampton Pirates 4-0 in the first round of the Big South Men's Tennis Championship at the Radford Tennis Complex.

BOX SCORE

The Spartans improve to 3-16 on the season while Hampton falls to 1-17 overall.

USC Upstate records its first conference tournament win since 2016 when it defeated Florida Gulf Coast 4-3 in Spartanburg to advance to the ASUN Men's Tennis Championship match.

DOUBLES
The Spartans got on the board first capturing the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead over the Pirates.

Samuel Schiano and Frederick Sydow recorded the first win for USC Upstate earning a victory by forfeit in the No. 3 match.

In the No. 1 match, the combination of Ankush Arora and Fernando Bernardes secured the doubles point with a 6-1 win over Luke Thompson and Davy Van Geerke. It was the team-leading sixth doubles victory of the season for Arora and Bernardes, who were named Second Team All-Conference Doubles on Tuesday.

SINGLES
The Spartans registered singles wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 to register the 4-0 victory.

Schiano quickly gave USC Upstate a 2-0 lead after winning his No. 6 singles match by forfeit.

Arora, who was also named Big South Second Team All-Conference Singles on Tuesday, extended the Spartans lead to 3-0 with his straight set victory at No. 1 over Van Geerke. Arora won the match 6-3, 6-1 for his team-leading seventh win of the season.

Sydow gave USC Upstate the 4-0 match victory at No. 4 singles as he defeated Basil Post in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-3. It was the third singles win for Sydow this season.
