Campbell Returns to Semifinals with 4-1 Win over Winthrop
RADFORD, Va. – Campbell rebounded after losing the doubles point to claim a 4-1 victory over Winthrop Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the Big South Conference men's tennis championship.
The second-seeded Camels (15-5) will meet third seed UNC Asheville, which advanced with a 4-3 win over Longwood, in Friday's 9:00 a.m. semifinals. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
Dustin Werner and Raphael Calzi gave the Camels an early lead in doubles. However, the Eagles rallied from a service break down and won tie breakers at both the second and third position to earn the point.
Ted Williams, who provided the winning margin in last year's 4-3 Big South final win over Winthrop, provided Campbell's first point Thursday with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the sixth singles position. Werner defeated Diego Quiroz 7-5, 6-1 at the top spot to put the Camels ahead 2-1.
Calzi and Gerard Sola added straight-sets wins at the third and fourth positions, respectively, to move the defending champs into the semifinal round for the third-straight year.
