Campbell Wins 2018-19 Sasser Cup Trophy
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Campbell University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2018-19 athletic season, marking the school’s fourth overall trophy and first since re-joining the Big South in 2011-12. The Cup was presented to Campbell Thursday evening at the league’s annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner, which was held at The Westin Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Final Standings
In 2018-19, Campbell averaged 9.36 Sasser Cup points in 19 championship sports and accumulated a total of 177.75 points based on its finish in conference regular-season and championship competition. The Camels won eight Big South championships in 2018-19 -- three outright/shared regular-season titles and five tournament crowns. Campbell won the regular-season title in baseball and shared the championship in men’s basketball and men’s tennis, while claiming the conference tournament championship in men’s cross country, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s golf, and baseball.
High Point finished second to Campbell this season with a 9.05 average in 15 sports and totaled 135.75 points -- the Panthers’ highest finish since 2013-14. Radford was third in the standings (8.19 average), and was followed by Charleston Southern (7.30) and Winthrop (6.50) to round out the top five.
The Panthers claimed the Women’s All-Sports Trophy for the second-straight year with their average of 9.84 (78.75 points earned in eight sports), ahead of Campbell’s 8.45 average (84.5 points earned in 10 sports). High Point won two regular-season and three tournament titles in women’s competition to capture the Women’s All-Sports Trophy. Radford was third in the Women’s All-Sports race with its 8.05 average (80.5 points earned in 10 sports).
Campbell claimed the Men’s All-Sports Trophy for the second consecutive year. The Camels’ Men’s All-Sports title was based on its 10.36 average (93.25 points earned in nine sports) as CU won or shared three regular-season and four tournament championships in men’s competition this past year. Radford was second with an average of 8.42 (50.5 in six sports), followed by High Point at 8.14 (57 points earned in seven sports).
The Sasser Cup Trophy is named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser and is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically, based on an average points system. Points are awarded for both regular-season and tournament finishes in each of the League’s 19 championships, and the average of the combined total is used to determine the overall point allocation in the respective sport. One bonus point is added to the average total for each Conference Champion/AQ representative, as well as any teams that receive at-large NCAA Championships berths. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play split the points earned. Each member’s overall point totals are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by that school to determine the average.
