Two Weeks Added To Hercules Tires Big South Virtual 5K
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Two weeks have been added to the Hercules Tires Big South Virtual 5K race that serves as a fundraising opportunity for middle school athletics programs in the Charlotte area. This year’s event -- held virtually for the first time -- will now run from Oct. 18 through Nov. 15, and participants will have four weeks to complete the 5K wherever they may be -- on a track, local neighborhood, running trail, park or a treadmill -- and simply record and submit their time online.
Registration continues through the official race website, www.bigsouth5k.com, and the two bonus weeks guarantee new sign-ups through Oct. 18 their official Hercules Tires Big South Virtual 5K race t-shirt and bib to wear in November.
This year’s race is proud to have a new title sponsor in Hercules Tires, involvement of all 14 Big South member and affiliate member institutions, and new youth charities within each school’s home market receiving proceeds from the race. The event has raised more than $160,000 in its history. This year’s entry fees feature two packages -- $30 (race t-shirt, bib, digital race bag) and $45 (deluxe package with medal along with race t-shirt, bib and digital race bag), and the first 100 registrants received a dust mask bandana courtesy of Hercules Tires. Registrants after Oct. 18 will receive their t-shirt and bib as processing and shipping permits.
New this year, the Big South’s full membership -- Campbell University, Charleston Southern University, Gardner-Webb University, Hampton University, High Point University, Longwood University, Presbyterian College, Radford University, UNC Asheville, USC Upstate and Winthrop University -- along with football associate members Kennesaw State University, Monmouth University and the University of North Alabama, comprise 14 teams participating to help raise money for designated youth athletic programs in their respective local or regional communities.
The Big South’s headquartered city of Charlotte, N.C., serves as the 15th local team, and will benefit middle school athletics programs in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.), Union (N.C.), and York/Rock Hill (S.C.) school districts. The Charlotte Team is sponsored by Keffer Auto Group.
During the registration process, participants have the option of selecting one of the 15 teams. As part of the Charlotte Team sign-up, a “middle school affiliation” option is available, and when a middle school is selected, proceeds from the participant’s registration fee will be sent to the selected middle school’s athletic booster club.
The annual Big South 5K Road Race was created in 2010 to serve as a fundraiser for middle school athletic programs in Mecklenburg and Union Counties of North Carolina.
