No. 6 UNC Asheville Defeats No. 11 Charleston Southern, Advances to Quarterfinals

Number six-seeded UNC Asheville women’s basketball set a record for most three-pointers in the first round of the Hercules Tires Big South Championships as they made 12 shots from long distance to defeat the No. 11 seed Charleston Southern, 82-46, Tuesday evening to advance to the Quarterfinals in Radford, Va.

In addition to setting the first round single game three-point record, the Bulldogs also set a new mark for three-pointers in a half in a Big South first round tournament game as UNC Asheville made eight three-pointers in the first half versus Charleston Southern.

Junior guard Tamiah Lewis went 5-6 from three setting a new individual Big South record with the most three-pointers in a first round game. Lewis also tied the Big South Tournament record for three-point field goal percentage in a single game with an 83.3% mark Tuesday evening.

Brooke Jordan-Brown led the Bulldogs with 18 points in the game while Lewis followed with a career-high of 15 points. Amaryah Corpening was the third Bulldog to score in double-figures as she finished the game with 11.

Jordan-Brown also led with nine rebounds while Zip Scott and Sonora Dengokl each secured six boards.

UNC Asheville made it known to the opposition early that points were going to be hard to come by as Charleston Southern did not score more than two points through the first seven minutes of the game. The Bulldogs closed out the entire first quarter allowing only five points from the Buccaneers. The Bulldogs meanwhile scored 16 points in the opening quarter as Jordan-Brown led all scorers with six. Scott managed to corral five rebounds in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

The second quarter was more of the same as the Bulldogs remained on the attack outscoring the Buccaneers 25-13 in the second quarter to take a 41-18 lead into the locker room at halftime. Corpening and Lewis each hit three long range shots in the first half as each of the two junior guards closed the half with nine points.

Even with the large lead, the Bulldogs didn’t miss a beat going into the third quarter as UNC Asheville scored 22 points in the quarter and limited Charleston Southern to only 10.

Charleston Southern scored 18 points in the fourth quarter but the Bulldogs scored 19 to secure the 36 point victory.
UNC Asheville now advances to the Quarterfinals of the Hercules Tires Big South Championships and will face No. 3 seeded High Point in an 8 p.m. matchup, Thursday, March 12, inside the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.
