CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Longwood junior attacker Emily Cate Smith (Roswell, Ga.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Lancer sophomore goalie Amelia Carlile (Monument, Colo.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Feb. 13-19, it was announced today. In addition, Winthrop attacker Scarlet Cifarelli (Long Beach, N.Y.) has been named the Freshman of the Week.

Smith registered a total of 11 points on four goals and seven assists to lead Longwood to a 2-0 start to the season for the first time since 2013. Opening the season on Feb. 15 at George Mason, she scored twice on three shots and had three assists in an 8-7 triumph. She also logged two caused turnovers against the Patriots. Smith followed up that performance with another big game by netting another two goals against Kennesaw State on Feb. 19 – including the game-winner with less than 90 seconds to play – while adding a team-high four assists for a six-point outing.

As the final line of defense, Carlile came up big for the Lancers as she picked up both wins in cage after combining for 23 saves with a .590 save percentage while allowing only 16 goals on 52 shots faced. In the win over Kennesaw State on Feb. 19, she had an especially strong second quarter with seven saves alone. She went on to finish that game with 15 saves total as LWU picked up a 13-12 win. Additionally, she totaled eight saves on 17 shots faced in Longwood’s 8-7 victory over George Mason on Feb. 15.

Playing in her first two career games, Cifarelli combined for two goals, four assists, three ground balls and one caused turnover in helping lead the Eagles to one win to start the year. She made an immediate impact with five points in Feb. 15’s season opener – one goal on two shots with a team-high four assists – to go along with two ground balls and a caused turnover in the Eagles’ 16-13 victory over Kennesaw State on Feb. 15. She also added the team’s only goal against Clemson on Feb. 18 while also picking up one ground ball.
