Big South Names Lacrosse Players of the Week – March 7

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Campbell junior attacker Rasa Welsh (Ellicott City, Md.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Campbell senior defender Shae Fitzgerald (New Market, Md.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played February 27 to March 5, announced today. Additionally, Furman attacker Reynolds Hester (Richmond, Va.) has been named the Freshman of the Week.

Welsh registered a team-high 10 points on the week, posting five points in each of Campbell’s wins. The junior dished out a season-high five assists in Wednesday’s 10-7 win at George Mason, adding three caused turnovers and a ground ball. Welsh then posted two goals and three more assists with two ground balls in Saturday’s 14-7 win over ODU.

Fitzgerald tallied six caused turnovers and five ground balls across CU’s two wins, helping the Camels hold both opponents to seven points. The senior caused five turnovers at George Mason, tying a CU single game record, adding three ground balls. The New Market, Md. native then picked up two ground balls with another caused turnover against ODU. Over the two wins, the CU defense notched two shutout quarters, and allowed two or fewer goals in six of its eight quarters.

Hester, meanwhile, tallied four points on a goal and three assists for Furman against No. 7 Florida and East Carolina, adding a ground ball. The freshman dished out a season-high two assist against the 7th-ranked Gators, registering another assist along with the Richmond, Va. native’s first career goal and ground ball against ECU.

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Mena Loescher (High Point), Kylie Sullivan (Presbyterian College), Riley McDonald (Longwood), Anna Roser (Furman), Chloe Schaeffer (Mercer) and Grayson McKenzie (Winthrop).

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Ava Scudillo (High Point), Avery West (Presbyterian College), Julia Koenig (Longwood), Katelyn Souza (Furman), Ainsley Malamala (Mercer), Grace Briggs (Gardner-Webb) and Maddy Hodgson Jr. (Winthrop).
