Big South Announces Women’s Lacrosse Players of the Week - April 18

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Mercer attacker Shannon Urey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Campbell’s Shae Fitzgerald (New Market, Md.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played April 10-16, it was announced today. In addition, Furman defender Grace Gibson (Orlando, Fla.) has been named the Freshman of the Week.

Urey combined for 14 goals in two wins to help Mercer remain undefeated in league play. She opened the week with a historic performance against Wofford on Wednesday, scoring 11 goals on 14 shots, the most goals ever scored by a Big South player and the most in a single game in NCAA Division I this season. Urey then followed up her career outing with another three goals on Saturday to lead the Bears past Furman, 18-13.

Fitzgerald posted seven caused turnovers, seven ground balls and 12 draw controls in two games to help Campbell pick up another two wins and remain perfect in conference play. On Wednesday at Gardner-Webb, she collected a career-high 11 draw controls to go along with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. She tacked on four caused turnovers and five ground balls on Saturday against Longwood while also tallying an assist in a home victory over the Lancers. 

Gibson registered four caused turnovers and six ground balls while helping anchor the Furman defense in two contests last week. She opened play with two ground balls and a career-high two caused turnovers against Radford, helping limit the Highlanders to only six goals in a 14-6 victory on the road. Facing league-leading Mercer on Saturday, she matched her new career-high with another two caused turnovers while also setting a new career-high in ground balls with four.

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Heather Lobas (Gardner-Webb), Lauren Cerretani (Longwood), Emma Pizzo (Mercer), Olivia Hunter (Radford), Madison Mills (Winthrop) and Kristen Courtemanche (Wofford). 

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Brooke Cressy (Campbell), Emma Duchscherer (Gardner-Webb), Shannon Smith (High Point), Sophia Passa (Longwood), Avery West (Presbyterian), Mady Cheney (Radford), Scarlett Cifarelli (Winthrop) and Carlie Cutinella (Wofford).
