Big South Men's Soccer Recap - Sept. 30

UNC Asheville picked up its first Big South win of the season with a road victory at Longwood, while Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, as well as Winthrop and USC Upstate, each played to 1-1 draws.

UNC ASHEVILLE 1, LONGWOOD 0 | BOX SCORE
UNC Asheville Men's Soccer blanked Longwood 1-0 for a Big South Conference road win on Saturday.  The teams went back and forth for most of the first half, before Benian Yao broke through off an assist from Stewart Patnaud for his first goal in an Asheville uniform in the 35th minute.  Asheville would take a 1-0 lead to the break.  Asheville would hold Longwood to six shots in the second half to come away with the victory.
 
GARDNER-WEBB 1, PRESBYTERIAN 1 | BOX SCORE
The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw in its Big South contest at Presbyterian College.  Jaylen Orr scored his third goal of the season for Gardner-Webb.  In the 60th minute, Presbyterian's Carson Griffith was fouled about 10 yards from midfield on the Blue Hose's defensive side of the field. Goalkeeper Beatty Murray sent the awarded free kick to just at the top of the box to Diego Hernandez who headed the ball back to Damorney Hutchinson who headed the ball from 10 yards out into the back of the net giving the Blue Hose a 1-0 lead. Hutchinson's goal was his second of the season.

WINTHROP 1, USC UPSTATE 1 | BOX SCORE
Ricardo Ferreira's goal in the 89th minute helped Winthrop earn a 1-1 draw in its Big South home opener against USC Upstate, Saturday night.  The Spartans were awarded a penalty kick in the 3rd minute after Dzenan Cerimagic was taken down in the box by an Eagle defender. Braiden Hall capitalized on the attempt to find the Spartan's only goal of the match.
