Big South Announces Volleyball Players of the Week - Sept. 5

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – USC Upstate outside hitter Ashleigh Nicoll (Holly Springs, N.C.) has been named the Big South Volleyball Player of the Week, while teammate Julia Gladhill (New Market, Md.) is the Big South Libero of the Week for matches played Aug. 28-Sept. 3, the Conference office announced today.  In addition, Charleston Southern middle blocker Brenna Rowland (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and High Point middle blocker Eve Wilson (Sandy, Utah) have been selected as the Co-Freshman of the Week.
 
Nicoll led all Big South players last week with 4.67 kills per set and 5.33 points per set in leading the Spartans to a 2-0 week.  She finished with a .424 hitting clip on 28 kills, and posted double-doubles in both matches.  Nicoll opened her week with 11 kills, a .435 percentage, 10 digs, career-high tying four service aces and 15.0 points in the Spartans’ 3-0 sweep of South Carolina State.  She then tallied 17 kills -- the most by a Big South player in a three-set match this season, plus a .410 hitting average, 10 digs and 17.0 points in a 3-0 sweep of Georgia State.
 
Gladhill averaged a league-best 4.50 digs per set with 27 in six sets last week to helping the Spartans to a 2-0 weekend.  Her play helped the Upstate defense hold the opposition to a .110 hitting efficiency -- including a .018 clip by Georgia State.  Gladhill tallied 10 digs in a victory vs. South Carolina State, followed by 17 digs (5.67 per set) against GSU.
 
Rowland tallied a .447 hitting percentage (21-4-38) and 13 total blocks (1.18 per set), along with 33.0 points (3.00 per set) in helping the Bucs to a 3-1 week.  She had a pair of seven-kill performances, setting new career-highs with them coming against Chattanooga (two sets played) and Southern Illinois (three sets played).  Rowland had seven block solos and six block assists in the four matches, and posted a .636 hitting percentage (7-0-11) in handing Southern Illinois its first loss of the season.   
 
Wilson earned All-Tournament Team honors with a .368 hitting clip (29-8-57) and 13 total blocks (1.00 per set), along with 37.5 points (2.88 per set) in helping the Panthers to a 2-1 weekend at the Army Invitational.  She opened with nine kills and seven blocks in a five-set setback to Liberty, hit .350 with nine kills in a four-set win over Yale, and finished the weekend with 11 kills, a .529 percentage and two blocks in a 3-1 win over Army.

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Jenna Otts (Gardner-Webb), Taryn Roberts (Radford) and Kylie Cackovic (UNC Asheville).
