Big South Announces Men's Soccer Players of the Week - Oct. 28

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– UNC Asheville midfielder Brendan Herb (Corvallis, Ore.) has been named the Big South Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while Bulldog defender Benian Yao (Waxhaw, N.C.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Oct. 21-27, it was announced today. In addition, Winthrop midfielder Ryan Armijo (Katy, Texas) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
 
Herb scored a goal in both of his matches, powering UNC Asheville to a perfect 2-0 week in conference play. The fifth-year midfielder converted a penalty kick in the 27th minute to equalize against Presbyterian, a match the Bulldogs went on to win, 2-1. He then added a second goal in as many matches with a strike in the 77th minute of a 4-0 victory at Longwood. Herb totaled eight shots in 146 minutes, with four of those going on goal.
 
Yao scored a goal and simultaneously anchored the UNC Asheville defense that allowed just one goal in two matches. He played all 90 minutes in a 2-1 win at Presbyterian to open the week. He then followed up with his second goal of the season in a 4-0 win at Longwood on Saturday, helping the Bulldogs earn their sixth shutout of the season, a new program record during its Division I era. 
 
Armijo started both matches last week, scoring a goal in Winthrop’s 3-1 conference win at Radford. He played a career-high 81 minutes in a 1-0 loss at Campbell before logging another 58 against the Highlanders. Armijo’s score on Saturday came in the 67th minute against Radford, an insurance goal to increase the Eagles’ lead to 3-1. 
 
Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Caio Hughes (Gardner-Webb) and Ethan Marks (Longwood).
