High Point Wins 2024 Big South Women's Cross Country Championship
CHARLESTON, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – With five of the top eight finishers,
High Point claimed its Big South-record eighth consecutive Women’s Cross Country championship and 10th in the last 11 seasons on Friday morning on the campus of Charleston Southern University. HPU’s
Brianna Malone crossed the finish line first in 16:52.0 to win her second consecutive individual title of the 5K race -- becoming the Panthers’ seventh individual champion in the past eight meets.
High Point closed the day with 22 points -- tied for the third-best team score in Championship history -- to extend its Big South record for consecutive championships to eight, while the title marked the program’s 11th overall -- second-most in league annals.
Charleston Southern (39) was second in the team standings, followed by
Radford (89) in third. In addition to Malone, the Panthers were buoyed by
Charli Montalvo (third, 17:05.8),
Alyssa Hendrix (fourth, 17:12.8),
Danielle Jensen (sixth, 17:39.1) and
Alice Jones (eighth, 17:44.0) on Friday.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Malone finished :08 seconds ahead of runner-up finisher
Keerstin Augustin of Charleston Southern (17:00.5), while her CSU teammates
Sarah McCartney (fifth at 17:19.1) and
Elizabeth Shaylor (seventh at 17:41.3) boosted the Buccaneers’ second-place standing. The top seven finishers earned First-Team All-Conference medals.
Malone is the first back-to-back Big South Champion since High Point’s
Famke Heinst in 2019 and 2020-21 when the event was run in the spring. Jensen is the Panthers’ third Big South Women’s Cross Country Freshman of the Year honoree in four seasons. Meanwhile, Hendrix was recognized as the Big South Newcomer of the Year, , while Montalvo, Augustin and McCartney each collected their third career All-Conference accolade.
Following the race, High Point’s
Remy Tamer was voted the Big South Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the third-straight year and sixth time overall, while Charleston Southern’s
Taylar White was voted the Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors. The final team results and standings along with this year’s honorees are listed below.
