Defending Big South champion Mercer, along with Winthrop, Longwood and Furman all won their conference openers on Wednesday,

The Mercer women's lacrosse team began conference play with a resounding 23-1 win at home over Presbyterian on Wednesday evening from Five Star Stadium. The Bears took control of the game from the start and allowed just one goal all game; tied for the fewest goals allowed in program history (vs Delaware State in 2017). Mercer midfielder Kayla Soltys won her 268th career draw control and in doing so, broke the Mercer women's lacrosse all-time draw control record. She also added four goals to go with her eight draw controls in the game.

Winthrop (1-7, 1-0 Big South) used a fast start to open Big South play with a home win over Gardner-Webb (0-10, 0-1 Big South) 13-8 on Wednesday afternoon, securing their first win of the season. The Eagles started the game by scoring three goals in the first three minutes, prompting a GWU timeout. Winthrop kept it going, scoring two more goals in the period to take a 5-2 lead at the end of 15 minutes of play. Grace Taylor scored two goals in the frame to lead the Eagles. After the visitors opened the second quarter with a goal, Winthrop scored three unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead going into the intermission.

Miranda Helfenbein was a holy terror on defense, and Longwood put the clamps on Radford in a 14-8 win to open Big South play on Wednesday night. Helfenbein had a whopping seven caused turnovers and added six ground balls for the Lancers (3-6, 1-0 Big South). The seven CTs were the second most in a game in program history. Meanwhile, Ariana Tucci, Holly Hill and Sophia Passa paid it off on the other end with hat tricks, and Emily Cate Smith provided the setup with five assists, a career high.

urman outscored Wofford, 8-4, in the second half Wednesday evening as the Paladins opened Big South Conference action with a 12-10 victory over the Terriers at Paladin Stadium. Furman, who extends its winning streak over Wofford to seven consecutive games, improves to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in the Big South. The Terriers drop to 3-6 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Wofford jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first quarter with Emma Stalteri and Bria Foley combining for all four goals. Anna Roser, who reached 100 career goals on Wednesday, scored twice in the opening two periods with her second cutting the Paladins' deficit to 5-3. The teams traded goals over the final five minutes with the Terriers holding a 6-4 lead at halftime.
