Big South Announces Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week - March 5

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Mercer midfielder Gabby DiVirgilio (Suwannee, Ga.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while High Point goalkeeper Ava Welsh (Ellicott City, Md.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Feb. 26-March 3, it was announced today. In addition, Mercer midfielder Ansley Walters (Canton, Ga.) has been named the Freshman of the Week.

 

DiVirgilio piled up nine points on six goals and three assists to lead Mercer offensively in their lone game last week, a 25-7 win over Kennesaw State. The six goals doubled her previous career high, and her three assists were also a career-best for the senior. She scored her six goals on seven shots – all of which were on target – while adding two ground balls.

 

Welsh posted 12 saves in 30 minutes of action in goal to lead High Point to a 17-14 victory over San Diego State on Sunday. The 12 saves were a career-high as she finished with a .600 save percentage and two ground balls.

 

Walters posted the first multi-goal game of her career with two goals on three shots, all of which were on target. Both goals came in the first half as the Canton, Ga. native helped Mercer build a commanding early lead over Kennesaw State en route to an 18-goal victory. In addition, Walters added one ground ball and one draw control. 

 

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Paige Harman (Furman), Jamie Weber (Gardner-Webb), Esprit Cha (High Point), Sophia Passa (Longwood) and Margaret Gleason (Radford).

 

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Lily Rathbun (Furman), Cybella Smith (Longwood), Abby Soltys (Mercer) and Olivia Hunter (Radford).

 

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Lilly Dyer (Furman), Emma Anderson (Gardner-Webb) and Cybella Smith(Longwood).
