Charleston Southern Leads 2024 Women's Golf Championship After First Round
FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –
Charleston Southern finished with an 8-over 296 and holds a two-shot lead after the first round of the 2024 Big South Women's Golf Championship on Sunday.
Longwood and
High Point share second-place at 10-over 298, with
USC Upstate in fourth at 15-over 303. The Championship is being contested at the Ocean Creek Golf Course (par 72, 6,004 yards) on Fripp Island, S.C.
Nine strokes separate the remaining five teams on the leaderboard.
Winthrop is fifth at 309, followed by
UNC Asheville in sixth (310),
Presbyterian in seventh (312),
Radford in eighth (314) and
Gardner-Webb in ninth (318).
Individually, Charleston Southern’s
Caroline Engelbredt carded a 3-under 69 in the opening round, and holds a one stroke lead over High Point’s
Ella Perna (70). Engelbredt tallied six birdies on the day -- including four on the back nine, while Perna had five birdies. UNC Asheville’s
Madyson Gold, Charleston Southern’s
Odette Font Garcia and HPU’s
Julia McLaughlin sit in a third-place tie at 1-over (73). Longwood’s first round was buoyed by three players all tied for sixth-place at 74 --
Emma Landis,
Ester Choi and
Lauren Sims.
