Gardner-Webb Leads Big South Men's Golf Championship After First Round
FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –
Gardner-Webb posted a team aggregate score of 8-under par 276 and holds a two-shot lead after the first round of the 2024 Big South Men's Golf Championship on Thursday.
High Point (-6, 278) and
Winthrop (-2, 282) also finished under par as a team for second- and third-place, respectively. The Championship is being contested at the Ocean Creek Golf Course (par 71, 6,526 yards) on Fripp Island, S.C.
Defending champion
Longwood entered the clubhouse in fourth place at even-par 284. Following the Lancers are
Radford in fifth (286),
Presbyterian in sixth (291),
USC Upstate in seventh (293) and
Charleston Southern in eighth (294).
Individually, 17 players carded red numbers during Thursday’s first round, with Charleston Southern’s
Ben Carroll and Gardner-Webb’s
Max White tied for the lead after 18 holes at 4-under 67. Both players had five birdies and an eagle on their card, while Carroll posted the lowest score on the front nine (5-under 30). Longwood’s
Justin LaRue and Radford’s
Bryce Corbett share the next spot on the leaderboard (third-place) at 3-under 68, and six players are tied for fifth after scoring 2-under 69s. LaRue and Winthrop’s
Nick Mayfield each had two eagles on Thursday, while High Point’s
Fred Roberts IV drained the most birdies on the afternoon with seven.
