FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – High Point’s Fred Roberts IV won a four-hole playoff over Winthrop’s Nick Mayfield to capture Medalist honors at the Big South Men’s Golf Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Creek Golf Course (par 71, 6,526 yards) on Fripp Island, S.C.  Mayfield tied the Big South Men’s Golf Championship 18-hole record with a 63 in the final round to surge up 12 spots and share the top spot on the leaderboard at 9-under 204, while Roberts -- the 36-hole leader at 10-under par -- finished 1-over on the day for his 204 at the conclusion of play.

The two birdied the first playoff hole (No. 1), and then matched pars on holes two and three.  Roberts was able to prevail when he parred the 290-yard par-4 No. 4 hole, while Mayfield suffered a bogey.  Roberts is High Point’s first Big South Medalist since 2018, and has secured automatic entry into the NCAA Regionals.

Mayfield sank eight birdies (four on each side) in the final round to become the fifth golfer in Big South Championship history with a 63, while Roberts was the fourth to achieve the feat during Friday’s second round.  On Saturday, Roberts ended his first nine holes even-par with birdies on seven and nine, and remained at 10-under for the Championship until a bogey on No. 18.  He was first joined in the lead by teammate Gregor Meyer, as both players were at 10-under through 15 holes.  Meyer finished the round with a 5-under 66 -- which included a hole-in-one on the 151-yard par-3 No. 12 hole, and tied for third-place.  HPU’s Grady Newton finished Saturday at 2-under 69 and joined Meyer in third at 8-under 205, while Radford’s Bryce Corbett carded an even-par 71 to finish fifth with a 6-under 207.  All five players were named to the Big South All-Championship Team.

In the team standings, Roberts, Meyer, Newton and Miller Carr’s 65 helped High Point to a 12-under 272 team aggregate score on Saturday and 31-under 821 for the top seed in Sunday’s Match Play Semifinal round.  The Panthers finished 18 strokes ahead of Winthrop (839), who vaulted into second-place buoyed by Mayfield’s 63.  Radford and Gardner-Webb tied for third-place at 847 for the final two spots into the Match Play round.

Sunday’s Match Play Championship Semifinal round will feature High Point against Gardner-Webb starting on hole one, and Winthrop vs. Radford beginning on hole 10.   The winners of each match will play in the championship final Sunday afternoon, with the champion receiving the Big South’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.  The Match Play round can be followed on GolfStat’s Live Scoring platform.
