HIGH POINT, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) USC Upstate sits atop the standings with 62 points following the first day of the 2024 Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships Monday at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University.  The Spartans had two individual champions and five All-Conference performers to build their opening day lead.  Host High Point is in second-place with 50 points, while Charleston Southern is third with 41 points.

Despite two separate lightning/rain delays that lasted just over a combined three hours, champions were still crowned on Monday in the Hammer Throw, Long Jump, Pole Vault, Javelin and 10,000-meter run.  USC Upstate’s Keyandre Davis won the hammer with a distance of 58.28m, while teammate Eastin Burch won the javelin with a throw of 59.08m.  Winthrop’s Kenneth Williams was the victor in the long jump with a leap of 7.34m.  High Point swept the pole vault for the fourth time since 2019, with Reid Holloway earning the gold medal with a clearance of 5.15m -- the first Big South pole vault champion to clear 5.00m since 2018.  Charleston Southern’s Conan Harper won the 10,000m run as he crossed the line in 30:31.27 to lead the Bucs to a podium sweep in the event –- the first 10K sweep in the Championship Meet since 2018.

In preliminary action, Charleston Southern’s Luciano Custodio finished with the top time in the 400m Hurdles at 52.82.  In the 200m prelims, Charleston Southern’s Shawn Langley Jr. had the top time at 21.08, while High Point’s Othmane El Gharissi paced the 1,500m runners with a top qualifying time of 3:58.79.

Meanwhile, High Point holds the top four spots in the decathlon after five events.  Cole Wilson leads with 4,053 points, ahead of Kolt Byers (3,400 points), Felix LeBlanc (3,384) and Will Reeves (3,143).
