HIGH POINT, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) Charleston Southern sits atop the standings with 28 points after the first day of the 2024 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships Monday at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University.  The Buccaneers are just ahead of second-place Radford (18 points) and third-place High Point (17 points).

Despite two separate lightning/rain delays that lasted just over a combined three hours, champions were still crowned on Monday in the Hammer Throw, Long Jump and 10,000-meter run.  USC Upstate’s Jessa Beach won the hammer on her final attempt with a distance of 58.65m, becoming the Spartans’ first champion in the event since becoming Big South members in 2019.  UNC Asheville’s Brianna Moore was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 6.14m -- marking the Bulldogs’ second consecutive Big South long jump champion.  Radford’s Chloe Wellings took home the 10,000m run in a Championship Meet- and Vert Stadium-record performance of 34:39.29 as part of her 20-second victory.

In preliminary action, Charleston Southern’s Jewel Ash posted the top time in the 400m Hurdles with a mark of 59.30 seconds.  High Point’s Dae’Nitra Hester had the top time in the 200m (24.03), and High Point’s Brianna Malone crossed the finish line in the 1,500m in 4:42.98 to earn the top spot in Wednesday’s final.

Meanwhile, UNC Asheville’s Mallory Haney is the Heptathlon leader following four events.  She sits in first-place with 3,039 points, ahead of High Point’s Karlea Duhon (3,016) and Winthrop’s Monay James (2,992).  Haney and Jones finished second and third in last year’s Heptathlon, respectively.
