High Point Takes Over Top Spot in Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship After Day Two

HIGH POINT, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – With three first-place finishers Tuesday and six individuals reaching the podium, three-time defending champion High Point took over the lead in the 2024 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 89 team points following the second day of competition at Vert Stadium on the campus of High Point University.  First day leader Charleston Southern dropped into second-place with 54 points, with UNC Asheville moving up three spots into third-place with 46 points.
 
Five individual champions were crowned on Tuesday.  UNC Asheville’s Mallory Haney won the triple jump with a 12.15m effort to become the Bulldogs’ first-ever Big South Triple Jump Champion.  Moments later, Winthrop’s Monay James captured the heptathlon with a score of 4,966 points to become the program’s first-ever Big South Heptathlon Champion.  The remaining afternoon belonged to High Point, as Letizia Marsico won the shot put with a personal-best distance of 14.62m.  Shortly thereafter, the Panthers completed their fifth consecutive medal sweep in the pole vault, as Auriane Viola won the event with a PR clearance of 4.15m.  Teammates Grady Moyer (3.60m) and Kaitlin Richards (3.45m) joined her on the medal stand.  Katie Taylor rounded out High Point’s champions on Tuesday by winning the 3,000m Steeplechase in a personal-best time of 10:32.14 -- :31 seconds ahead of her closest finisher.
 
The Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships conclude Wednesday, May 8 from Vert Stadium, beginning at 3:30pm on ESPN+.  High Point will attempt to become just the second Big South member to win four consecutive titles.
