High Point Wins 2024 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship

High Point recorded 21 teams points in the 5,000m run to erase a four-point deficit and overtake
Charleston Southern to win the 2024 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title. The Panthers finished with a final total of 242 points for the program’s fourth consecutive crown. CSU was second with 231 points, while
Radford climbed one spot to finish in third-place with 87 points.
High Point won eight events and compiled 14 podium finishes Wednesday. HPU held a slight overall lead for most of the afternoon until Charleston Southern collected 26 points in the 400m Hurdles and 19 points in the 200m to move into the top spot on the leaderboard entering the final two events. The Panthers earned points in the 5,000m from
Charli Montalvo (second),
Katie Taylor (third),
Olive Allen (fourth) and
Anna Ritter (seventh) to regain the lead for good, as the Bucs managed four points in the event.
The Panthers tallied 153 team points on Wednesday, led by gold medals from
Sydney Koker (high jump),
Letizia Marsico (discus),
Karlea Duhon (javelin),
Brianna Malone (1,500m),
Lindsay Cooper (100mH, 400mH),
Nikki Frail (800m) and
Dae’Nitra Hester (200m). In other action, Charleston Southern swept the relay events, as the Bucs won the 4x100m in 45.51, and capped the evening with the 4x400m crown in a time of 3:40.68. Radford’s
Chloe Wellings repeated as the 5,000m champion with a time of 16:47.59 -- becoming just the fourth back-to-back 5,000m champion in Big South history.
Charleston Southern’s
Chloe Greene accumulated 31 overall points to earn her the Most Valuable Athlete award. HPU’s Malone claimed Freshman of the Year honors for having the most accumulated points by a freshman with 20. High Point’s
Auriane Viola earned Most Outstanding Performance based on having the highest ranking performance nationally at the meet using current TFFRS marks, as her pole vault winning height of 4.15m ranks tied for 53rd in the country. Charleston Southern’s
Amaya Johnson clinched the Newcomer of the Year award based on her 21 accumulated points. High Point Head Coach
Mike Esposito was voted Coach of the Year by the league coaches at the conclusion of the meet, while UNC Asheville’s
Brianna Moore was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.
