USC Upstate's Quintavius James Qualifies for USATF U20 Outdoor Championships
By USC Upstate Athletics
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Quintavius James, a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia, has swiftly made a name for himself at USC Upstate Athletics. Although in limited action, he has made an immediate impact. James has earned a qualifying spot at the 2024 USATF U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he will compete in the men's 100 meters.
Despite not fully competing during the 2023-2024 collegiate season, Quintavius' performance has been remarkable. He took first place in the 60 meters at the VMI Winter Classic and secured several top-10 finishes in the 100 meters.
James was a late signee for the 2023-2024 Spartan recruiting class. A lingering hamstring injury impacted his availability and, ultimately, the recruiting process. However, Upstate was "a great fit" for him and has allowed him to flourish.
"It's really exciting; I've been battling injuries the last two years, and to qualify when I know I am not even 100% makes me even more motivated," James shared. His words echo the challenges he has faced and overcome, making his achievements even more significant.
As the USATF U20 Championships draw near, the soon-to-be Sophomore focus remains, "My aim is to compete, enjoy the process, and hopefully set a new personal record," he stated with a smile. "It will also be cool to see Oregon and Nike headquarters --I've never been there."
Looking ahead, beyond Eugene, he acknowledges the importance of the off season. "This summer will be big for me. I need to get healthier, and my focus will be on strength training and injury prevention," he emphasized. James mentioned several times that this hopefully is not the last time he competes at "one of the centers of the Track and Field world."
Head Coach Carson Blackwelder also expressed his enthusiasm for his athlete's chance to compete in Oregon, "We are excited for Quintavius to compete at U20 championships. He will compete against great competition in one of the greatest facilities in the world. This will cap off a great freshman year for him."
The U20 Track and Field Championships will be on June 12-13 and can be watched live on USATF.TV.
