Big South Men's Soccer Conference-Opening Summary - Sept. 20-22
The Big South men's soccer conference season got underway the weekend of Sept. 20-22, and High Point, Gardner-Webb, Winthrop and Longwood netted victories for three points in the league standings.

Senior forward Ethan Stevenson scored a hat trick in the final 14 minutes to carry the Longwood men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Presbyterian in the Big South Conference opener for both at Martin Stadium on Sunday.

Winthrop men's soccer opened up Big South Conference play with a 2-0 road victory over USC Upstate, Saturday evening. The Eagles caught a break in the early going as Adrian Panaite's shot in the 2nd minute hit off the right post and escaped without yielding a goal. Winthrop finally broke through in the 49th minute as they earned a penalty and Rodrigo Ferreira calmly placed a shot into the net for his first of the season.

The Gardner-Webb University men's soccer team defeated visiting Radford 2-1 on Saturday night at Greene-Harbison Stadium, coming from behind to start Big South Conference play with a win. Things didn't get off to a flying start under the lights on Saturday, with the Highlanders jumping into the lead inside five minutes. A turnover at the back allowed Radford through on goal, where the visitors took a 1-nil lead on their only shot attempt of the game to that point. GWU continued to dominate the ball and eventually did find a breakthrough however. Junior forward Elias Khodri slotted home from the edge of the box after a perfectly timed chest-pass from junior defender Leo Andrade, bringing the crowd to its feet and leveling the score at 1-1 after 28 minutes.

The Panthers showed up and showed out on Family Weekend in front of 1,859 fans on Friday night, defeating UNC Asheville 2-1 for their first Big South Conference victory. High Point got off to a hot start as the Panthers quickly took a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Brendan Krueger sent a beautiful cross into the box, where Frankie DeFrancesco placed himself perfectly to get a foot on it to give HPU the lead.
