Big South Announces Men's Soccer Players of the Week - Sept. 3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– High Point midfielder Ross Johnstone (Kent, England) has been named the Big South Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while UNC Asheville goalkeeper Charlie Farrar (Wakefield, United Kingdom) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 26-Sept. 1, it was announced today. In addition, UNC Asheville defender Tyler Leonard (Prior Lake, Minn.) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.

 

Johnstone scored his first goal of the season to lead High Point to a 1-1 draw on the road at No. 14 VCU on Saturday. The graduate student broke a scoreless tie in the 72nd minute when he blasted a rebound past the goalkeeper to put HPU ahead, 1-0, with 19:05 remaining. It was one of his two shots on the evening in 78 minutes on the pitch, marking his first goal as a Panther.

 

Farrar tallied 11 saves across two matches and picked up his second win and first shutout of the season for UNC Asheville against VMI. He logged a .846 save percentage on 28 shots faced in a combined 170:24 in net. The senior made five saves on 17 shots in a 2-0 defeat at Virginia Tech to begin the week, as Asheville joined No. 23 Kentucky as the only two teams to hold the Hokies to two goals so far this season. He followed with six saves on 11 shots in an unblemished 3-0 victory over VMI on Sunday. 

 

Leonard scored his first career goal in his first career start, a game-winner for UNC Asheville on Sunday against VMI. The Prior Lake, Minn. native wasted no time as he cleaned up a rebounded shot and put it past the diving Keydet goalkeeper just 54 seconds in, putting the Bulldogs ahead in the process, 1-0. He tallied two shots for the week in 96 minutes overall. 

 

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Lucas Mauro (Gardner-Webb), Aaron Asamoah (Longwood), Carson Griffith (Presbyterian), Louis Beckett (UNC Asheville) and Bruno Riveron Sagrero (Winthrop).
