Big South Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Sept. 3

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Charleston Southern midfielder Daniela Contreras (San José, Costa Rica) and USC Upstate forward Dara Russo (Miamisburg, Ohio) have been named the Big South Women’s Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Radford defender Helena Willson (Leesburg, Va.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Aug. 26-Sept. 1, it was announced today. In addition, High Point forward Sabba Haghgoo (Crofton, Md.) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.

 

Contreras scored twice in Charleston Southern’s 2-2 draw against Campbell on Thursday, the first multi-goal match of her career. The senior opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal in the 23rd minute to give the Buccaneers an early 1-0 advantage. After the Fighting Camels rebounded with two scores of their own, Contreras netted the equalizer for CSU in the 57th minute, an unassisted goal on a breakaway. She put three of her four shots on target in 75 minutes on the pitch, while her four points set a new single-match career high.

 

Russo tallied four points on two assists and one goal, including the game-winner, in USC Upstate’s 4-1 victory over VMI. She helped the Spartans strike first with an assist to teammate Nya Baccelli at the 28:43 mark, and she followed up with a penalty kick goal of her own four minutes later to give Upstate a quick 2-0 lead. The junior added to her assist total in the second half with another in the 50th minute when she found Paige Armstrong to go ahead 3-0. She put three of her four shots on target in 50 minutes.

 

Willson scored the game-winner while leading Radford’s backline to a third-straight shutout on Saturday at Mount St. Mary’s. The graduate student connected from 35 yards out in the 26th minute to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead, and she ultimately fired off seven shots on the afternoon in total, with four going on target. Willson also anchored a defensive unit that held The Mount scoreless on only five shots on target.

 

Haghgoo scored her first collegiate goal in a commanding 4-0 win over West Georgia. Leading 2-0, the freshman added a third High Point goal in the 65th minute when she found the back of the net off an assist from teammate Meg Garmey. Haghgoo’s goal came on her lone shot on goal in 55 minutes of play during HPU’s first victory of the season. 

 

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Lina-Marie Müller (Presbyterian), Lilly Short (Radford), Ava Bjorkman-Tracy (UNC Asheville) and Lauren Kelly (Winthrop).

 

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Megan Garmey (High Point), Gwin Keiser (Presbyterian), Meghan Groah (USC Upstate) and Mia Vrataric (Winthrop).

 

Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Avery Mason (Charleston Southern).
