Big South Announces Men's Basketball Players of the Week - Jan. 13

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Winthrop forward Kelton Talford (Great Falls, S.C.) has been named the Big South Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while USC Upstate guard Mister Dean (Miami, Fla.) and Winthrop guard Paul Jones III (Suffolk, Va.) are the Co-Freshmen of the Week honorees for games played Jan. 6-12, it was announced today.

Talford led the Eagles in scoring and rebounding last week with 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting 76.2 percent across two games.  He opened his week with 10 rebounds and 21 points at Gardner-Webb -- including 20 in the second half with 10 coming in succession that tied the contest twice as Winthrop erased a 16-point deficit before falling.  Talford was 9-of-11 from the field, grabbed four offensive boards and tallied one assist, one block and one steal.  In Winthrop’s victory over Longwood on Saturday, Talford totaled 17 points, nine rebounds (three offensive) and two steals, and was 7-of-10 from the floor.

Dean averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals while shooting 60.9 percent from the field (14-of-23) and making all nine free throws in two games.  He led the Spartans to their first Big South win of the season with 23 points, eight caroms and four steals against Presbyterian on Wednesday.  Dean followed with a team-high 16 points, 5-of-7 from the floor and three assists in Saturday’s setback vs. Radford.
 
Jones III finished with a game-high 24 points, made 6-of-11 three-pointers and was 9-of-14 overall from the field in Winthrop’s victory over Longwood on Saturday.  He scored 22 of his points in the first half to push the Eagles to a 53-30 advantage at intermission.  Jones III opened his week with nine points and two blocks at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, and his short jumper with 1:34 to play brought Winthrop to within one point.  He concluded the week 12-of-21 from the floor ( =57.1 percent) and 7-of-15 from long range ( =46.7 percent).
