Big South Announces Women's Basketball Players of the Week - Feb. 10

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Gardner-Webb guard Ashley Hawkins (Long Beach, Calif.) has been named the Big South Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, while USC Upstate guard Gwen Jenkins (Columbus, Ohio) is the Freshman of the Week for games played Feb. 3-9, it was announced today.
 
Hawkins averaged 29.0 points on 54.5 percent shooting (18-of-33) with 5.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in Gardner-Webb’s two wins last week. She shot 50.0 percent from 3-point range (4-of-8) and 94.7 percent from the free-throw line (18-of-19). The senior guard tallied 28 points, five assists and three rebounds in Wednesday’s home win over UNC Asheville, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep and 12-of-13 at the line. She also scored the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ final 14 points to seal the victory. Hawkins followed with 30 points, five assists and three rebounds in Saturday’s win at Charleston Southern, finishing 11-of-21 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the line.
 
Jenkins scored 10 points, the second-highest on the team, in a four-point comeback win over Winthrop on Saturday, including a clutch basket with 2:11 remaining to pull the Spartans within five. For the week, she averaged 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 40.0 percent from the field (4-of-10) and a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. The Columbus, Ohio, native opened the week with six points, three rebounds, two assists and a block against Presbyterian on Wednesday. She followed with 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting against Winthrop, adding one rebound and one assist.
