Big South Announces Softball Players of the Week - Feb. 25

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –- USC Upstate infielder Carson Shaw (Summerville, S.C.) has been named the Big South Softball Player of the Week, while teammate Sierra Maness (Woodruff, S.C.) is the Pitcher of the Week for games played Feb. 17-23, it was announced today.  In addition, Spartans’ utility player Sophia Kardatzke (Jacksonville, Fla.) is the Freshman of the Week honoree.
 
Shaw batted .529 (9-17) with seven RBI in leading the Spartans to a 6-0 week.  She posted four multi-hit games, as well as two multi-RBI efforts, along with two doubles, a .647 slugging percentage and .600 on-base average.  Shaw went 2-3 in wins over Eastern Kentucky, South Carolina State, North Carolina A&T and Colgate.  She had three RBI vs. Colgate and drove in two runs vs. N.C. A&T.  Shaw also handled 38 chances at first base without an error (36 putouts, two assists).
 
In four appearances in the circle at the Sparkle City Classic, Maness went 3-0 plus a save with a 0.84 earned run average.  She struck out 17 batters and allowed just six hits in 16.2 innings of work.  Maness defeated South Carolina State with six strikeouts and three hits allowed in 5.0 innings on Friday, earned the save against North Carolina A&T with two innings of hitless relief on Saturday, earned a relief win vs. Colgate on Saturday with four punchouts and two hits in 4.2 innings, and permitted just one hit with five strikeouts in five innings vs. the Aggies on Sunday.
 
Kardatzke batted .526 (10-19) with seven runs scored, nine RBI, five stolen bases, three home runs and three doubles in six games last week.  She slugged 1.158 along with a .550 on-base percentage.  Kardatzke had four multi-hit games, and stole a base in five-straight contests.  She homered against Canisius, South Carolina State and North Carolina A&T, and drove in five runs in the win over S.C. State.
 
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Avery Drake (Longwood), Mallory Fletcher (Presbyterian), Isabel Harrison (Radford) and Peyton Bryden (Winthrop).
 
Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week: Maggie Chapin (Longwood), Kasey Wolfe (Presbyterian) and Lonna Addison (Winthrop).
 
Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Bailey Bucholz (Longwood), Baxleigh Arnette (Presbyterian) and Dakota Redmon (Radford).
