Big South Announces Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week - March 4
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – Furman senior attack
Anna Roser (Easton, Md.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Wofford senior goalkeeper
Ella Smithers (Williamsville, N.Y.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Feb. 24-March 2, it was announced today. In addition, Presbyterian College attack
Emily Currie (Easton, Md.) has been named the Freshman of the Week.
Roser scored 10 goals to help pace Furman to a 2-0 record last week with convincing home wins over Delaware State and Mercyhurst. She also added three ground balls and caused a team-high three turnovers. She opened the week with a hat trick against Delaware State, adding two ground balls and a caused turnover. She then became Furman’s all-time leading scorer with seven goals Sunday against Mercyhurst, the most in the Big South this season, while tacking on a ground ball and two caused turnovers.
Smithers recorded 12 saves, including a crucial stop in the final second of regulation, to help secure Wofford’s thrilling 11-10 overtime victory at Campbell last Wednesday. She posted a .545 save percentage and a 9.58 goals-against average while facing 27 shots over a full 62:39 in goal. After Wofford fell behind early, Smithers made three saves in the second quarter, six in the third, and three more in the fourth to keep the Terriers within striking distance—capping her performance with a game-saving stop at the final horn.
Currie established a new Presbyterian record in Sunday's 18-6 victory over Delaware State, scoring 7 times (with an additional assist) to denote the most goals in a single match of any freshman in school history. Her eight total points against DSU are the most by any PC player—regardless of class—since 2022, as she converted seven of her nine shot attempts while also recording a draw control win and a caused turnover. Currie produced nine of her 11 goals on the season in her two appearances this week, also scoring a pair in Tuesday's outing with Eastern Michigan. She scored five times in the first half alone during the Delaware State win, responsible for the first three goals of the game in less than seven minutes.
