Amp Phillips (Lancaster, S.C) is the Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played April 7-13, it was announced today. In addition, Radford’s
Andrew Steinhaus (Middletown, Del.) was selected as the Relief Pitcher of the Week, while USC Upstate’s
Henry Zenor (St. Louis, Mo.) is the Freshman of the Week honoree.
Echazarreta hit .556 (10-for-18) with nine runs scored, seven RBI, five extra-base hits, and a walk-off single in High Point’s perfect 4-0 week. He homered, tripled, doubled three times, and drew five walks, notching multiple hits in all four games, including a pair of three-hit outings. The senior opened the week by going 3-for-5 with two doubles and the walk-off RBI single to cap a three-run ninth-inning rally against North Carolina A&T. He followed with seven hits in the weekend sweep of Longwood, tripling in Friday’s opener and driving in three runs in each of the final two games, capped by a three-run homer on Sunday.
Waters slashed .583/.600/1.250 on the week while going 7-for-12 with 13 RBI and five runs scored. He tallied two home runs and two doubles, driving in four or more runs in each game during Upstate’s weekend sweep of Winthrop. The junior opened the series with a 2-for-4 effort on Friday, adding a double, a walk, and four RBI. He followed with a 3-for-4 performance on Saturday, contributing another double, a sac fly, and four more RBI. Waters capped the weekend by going 2-for-3 in Sunday’s finale, launching two homers, drawing a walk, and driving in five.
Phillips picked up his second consecutive quality start, helping Upstate secure a series victory Saturday over Winthrop. He scattered three hits, six baserunners, and one run over 6.0 innings of work to earn the win, striking out five while pitching to a .150 opponent’s batting average. He punched out a pair of hitters in the first inning, stranding a pair in scoring position. The right-hander added another strikeout in a 1-2-3 third inning, going on to punch out two more in the fourth before retiring the Eagles in order in the fifth. Phillips held Winthrop scoreless for his first 5.1 innings of work.
Steinhaus delivered 6.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win against Gardner-Webb, striking out a career-high eight batters. He allowed seven hits and issued just one walk after entering the game in the second inning after Radford’s starter exited due to injury. Steinhaus recorded at least one strikeout in every inning he pitched, including multiple punchouts in both the fourth and sixth frames.
Zenor posted a .636/.722/1.000 slash line across four wins while going 7-for-11 with five RBI, six runs scored, a double, and a home run. He also drew six walks. Zenor opened the week by tying his career high with three walks at South Carolina. In the series opener against Winthrop, he went 3-for-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle, tallying a homer, double, walk, two RBI, and three runs to help spark 14 unanswered runs for Upstate. He followed with a 1-for-1 performance in game two, adding two walks, a sac fly, one RBI, and two runs scored. Zenor closed out the series with a 3-for-5 effort, driving in two and scoring once.
