UNC Asheville Leads 2025 Women's Golf Championship After First Round

FRIPP ISLAND, S.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– UNC Asheville finished with a 15-over 303 and holds a one-shot lead after the first round of the 2025 Big South Women's Golf Championship on Sunday. It is the first time that Asheville -- which began sponsoring the sport in 2017 -- has held the top spot on the Conference Championship leaderboard following any round of the tournament.  High Point is one stroke behind the Bulldogs at 304 (+16), while Charleston Southern sits in third-place at 307 (+19).  The Championship is being contested at the Ocean Creek Golf Course (par 72, 6,032 yards) on Fripp Island, S.C.
 
Eight strokes separate the next five teams, as Radford holds the fourth position at 310.  Longwood and USC Upstate are tied for fifth at 311, with Gardner-Webb two shots behind in seventh (313).  Presbyterian sits in eighth-place at 318, followed by Winthrop in ninth (323).

Individually, High Point's Julia McLaughlin was the only player to shoot under-par on Sunday, as she finished with a 2-under 70.  She holds a three-shot lead over UNC Asheville's Caroline Patterson (73).  Radford's Shea Smith sits in third-place at +2 (74), ahead of six players tied for fourth at 3-over 75.  McLaughlin's day was highlighted by three birdies, as well as an eagle on the par-4, 290-yard No. 4 hole.
