Big South Baseball Summary - April 17
All four home teams were victorious on Thursday night, as Winthrop, High Point, Charleston Southern and Radford openend their respective Big South series with wins.
WINTHROP 6, GARDNER-WEBB 3 | BOX SCORE
Winthrop took the series opener from Gardner-Webb at home Thursday evening. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first on Jaylen Hernandez's RBI double to left center field with no one out and Nate Chronis's sac bunt. Gardner-Webb put runners on second and third in the top of the second but the next two batters were retired. Winthrop extended its margin to 6-0 on Chronis's two-run RBI double to left field and Josh Skowronski's two-run homer to right field.
HIGH POINT 15, UNC ASHEVILLE 3 | BOX SCORE
The High Point University baseball team took game one of the series, 15-3, over UNC Asheville on Thursday night. The Bulldogs jumped to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of first off HPU starter, Dalton Hitt. The Panthers answered as Landen Johnson smoked a backside line drive home run to cut into the deficit early in the ball game. high Point put up a six run second inning on six hits to spread the lead open. Christian Smith poked an opposite field two-run home run, before Miggy Echazarreta knocked down a two-run double and Johnson added another RBI to his line with a SAC fly to right field to cap the inning.
CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 9, LONGWOOD 8 | BOX SCORE
The Buccaneers opened their weekend series against Longwood on Thursday evening with a 9-8 result under the lights at Nielsen Field @ CSU Ballpark. In the first, both teams were able to get on the board with Longwood getting theirs to score on a fielding error by the Bucs. They did not trail for long as Kaden Smith had a solo homer in the bottom half of the inning. Later in the frame, Nathan Martinez reached on a fielding error by the shortstop which allowed for Aidan McAskie and Chandler Tuupo to score to bring the score to 3-1.
RADFORD 3, PRESBYTERIAN 2 | BOX SCORE
Breckin Nace fired a gem on the mound and Tyler Sparrer was all the offense the Radford baseball program would need as the Highlanders collected a 3-2 victory to open an important Big South series against Presbyterian inside Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium on Thursday night. It was the fourth consecutive win for a Radford squad that is heating up at just the right time. The victory also improved the Highlanders to 6-7 in conference play and tied for fourth overall in the Big South standings. The win streak is the second longest active streak in the conference.
