ASHEVILLE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) High Point sits atop the standings with 39 points after the first day of the 2025 Big South Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships Monday at the Karl Straus Track on the campus of UNC Asheville.  The Panthers won two of the three scored events and are ahead of second-place Gardner-Webb (26 points) and third-place USC Upstate (24 points).

With the Championship Meet schedule adjusted to an earlier start due to weather, the event endured two separate lightning/rain delays late in the afternoon that lasted just over a combined two hours.  Champions were still crowned on Monday in the Hammer Throw, Long Jump and 10,000-meter run as scheduled.

USC Upstate’s Rachel Davis won the hammer with a distance of 58.19m, becoming the Spartans’ second consecutive champion in the event, while High Point’s Gianna Paul was victorious in the long jump with a distance of 5.91m.  HPU’s Charli Montalvo, last year’s runner-up in the 10,000m run, moved ahead of Charleston Southern’s Sarah McCartney in the final lap and used a split time of 1:11.730 in the last 400m to win the race by seven seconds.

In preliminary action, Charleston Southern’s Austyn Koppe posted the top time in the 400m Hurdles with a mark of 59.47 seconds.  High Point’s Dae’Nitra Hester had the top time in the 200m (24.02), and Charleston Southern’s Freya Buglass crossed the finish line in the 1,500m in 4:42.52 to earn the top spot in Wednesday’s final.

Meanwhile, Gardner-Webb’s Isa van Sintemaatensdijk is the Heptathlon leader following four events.  She sits in first-place with 2,753 points, ahead of High Point’s Kaitlyn Greene (2,435) and Radford’s Kandace McIvor (2,388).
