High Point Wins 2025 Big South Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –
High Point scored 174 team points thanks to eight gold medals to win its fifth-straight Big South Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship title on Wednesday with a final total of 304 points -- the second-highest total in Big South history.
USC Upstate finished runner-up with 139 points, followed by
UNC Asheville in third with 130 points.
Gardner-Webb’s
Quentin Peterson started the day winning his third gold medal, as he finished first in the discus with a Championship Meet-record throw of 58.06m, his second Meet record this week. He also became the first athlete in Big South history to win the hammer, shot put and discus at the same Meet.
High Point then won the next five events, as the Panthers’ champions were
Alex Constantinou (high jump), the
4x100m Relay,
Graham Ferguson (1,500m),
Antonio Votour (110m Hurdles) and
Tim Brown (400m). Later in the afternoon, HPU’s
Camerin Williams won the 800m in a Meet-record time of 1:47.37, while
Hunter Steinau outkicked UNC Asheville’s
Paul Kiprotich and fell across the finish line to win the 5,000m by 0.07 seconds -- 14:29.77 to 14:29.84. The Panthers also captured the
4x400m Relay in a time of 3:07.58.
UNC Asheville’s
DaMarr Harvey claimed both the 100m (10.28) and 200m (20.82) races, while USC Upstate’s
Shriyaan Krishnaraj won the 400m Hurdles.
Gardner-Webb’s Peterson accumulated 30 overall points to earn him the Most Valuable Athlete award. UNC Asheville’s
Shemarr Session claimed Freshman of the Year honors for having the most accumulated points by a freshman with 17.5. High Point’s
Cole Wilson earned Most Outstanding Performance based on having the highest ranking performance nationally at the meet using current TFFRS marks, as his decathlon-winning score of 7,609 ranks 17th in the country. USC Upstate’s
Jeremiah Harris won the Newcomer of the Year award, which was added in 2024 to recognize the top non-freshman transfer competing in the Big South for the first time, based on his 16.75 accumulated points.
High Point was voted Coaching Staff of the Year by the league coaches at the conclusion of the meet, while HPU’s Ferguson was voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the league’s sports information directors.
