Big South Announces Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Nov. 2
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – High Point forward
Morgan Wilcox (Okemos, Mich.) has been named the Big South Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, while USC Upstate’s
Annabelle Wunderlich (Dallastown, Pa.) is the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Oct. 26-Nov. 1, it was announced today. In addition, Upstate forward
Jasmyn Mitchner (Tampa, Fla.) has been selected as the Freshman of the Week.
Wilcox scored in each match and totaled five points to lead High Point to conference wins over Charleston Southern and Winthrop. On Saturday, she delivered the game-winning goal with seven seconds remaining to complete a dramatic comeback, as the Panthers scored twice in the final two minutes for an improbable 2-1 victory over the Eagles. Earlier in the week, the junior scored a goal and added an assist, marking the first time in her career she recorded both in the same match. Wilcox put five of her six shots on target while playing 109 minutes across the two matches.
Wunderlich contributed a goal and two assists while helping USC Upstate secure an outright Big South regular-season championship with a shutout victory over Gardner-Webb. The senior assisted on the Spartans’ opening goal in the 14th minute before converting a penalty kick in the 23rd minute for her fifth goal of the season. She later helped set up another goal in the 72nd minute to extend Upstate’s lead to 3-0. Wunderlich finished with three shots, all on target, while also anchoring a defensive effort that limited the Runnin’ Bulldogs to just four shots, including two on goal, over the full 90 minutes.
Mitchner recorded her first career multi-goal performance, scoring twice in USC Upstate’s victory over Gardner-Webb to help the Spartans clinch the outright Big South regular-season championship. The freshman opened the scoring in the 14th minute to give Upstate an early advantage before adding an unassisted goal in the 86th minute to cap the championship-clinching victory. Mitchner led the Spartans with four shots, all on target, while playing 80 minutes.
