Big South Announces Men's Basketball Players of the Week - Feb. 9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – USC Upstate guard Karmani Gregory (Palmetto, Fla.) has been named the Big South Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, while Charleston Southern guard Jacob Taylor (Marietta, Ga.) is the Freshman of the Week honoree for games played Feb. 2-8, it was announced today.

Gregory averaged 25.5 points, 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and shot 90.5 percent from the free throw line (19-of-21) in two games last week.  He opened his week with a game-high 22 points in the Spartans’ setback at UNC Asheville on Wednesday, as he was also the team’s leading rebounder with five while adding four assists and a steal.  Gregory then scored a career-high 29 points in Upstate’s overtime victory against Charleston Southern on Saturday.  He handed out seven assists, recorded two steals and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the charity stripe.  For the week, he was 14-of-32 from the field ( =43.8 percent) and 4-of-11 from long range ( =36.4).
 
Taylor doubled his season scoring high with a career-best 24 points in Charleston Southern’s overtime loss at USC Upstate.  He was 7-of-11 from the floor ( =63.6 percent), 4-of-7 from beyond the arc ( =57.1) and made all six free throws.  Taylor also tallied four rebounds, three assists and a steal in the contest.
 
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Jesse Hafemeister (Charleston Southern), Owen Aquino (High Point), Johan Nziemi (Longwood), Jaylen Peterson (Presbyterian), Toyaz Solomon (UNC Asheville) and Logan Duncomb (Winthrop).
 
Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Spence Sims (Gardner-Webb) and Myles Mayfield (UNC Asheville).
