Big South Announces Baseball Players of the Week - March 10

Kelvin Agosto (Vega Baja, P.R.) has been named the Big South Baseball Player of the Week, while High Point’s
Wade Walton (Lithia, Fla.) is the Starting Pitcher of the Week for games played March 2-8, it was announced today. In addition, High Point’s
Tyler Shafer (High Point, N.C.) was selected as the Relief Pitcher of the Week, while Winthrop pitcher
Garrett Byrd (Snow Hill, N.C.) is the Freshman of the Week honoree.
Agosto drove in seven runs on three hits, including two home runs, in Gardner-Webb’s series-opening 19-5 win over Oklahoma State. He batted .500 on the week in four games against the Cowboys and Duke, going 6-for-12 with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs. He also drew two walks to finish with a .600 on-base percentage and a 1.167 slugging percentage. Agosto had one hit in three at-bats against Duke before recording at least two hits in each of the next two games to open the OSU series.
Walton earned the win on Friday night against No. 9 Florida, helping High Point clinch its highest ranked win in program history. He tossed 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on six hits and striking out four batters. He only surrendered one walk.
Shafer pitched 3.1 innings across two appearances against No. 9 Florida, helping the Panthers pull of a historic series win against the top 10 nationally-ranked Gators. He allowed no runs on three hits and one walk while striking out six. In game one against the Gators, the junior pitched the eighth inning allowing just one hit and striking out one. He then came in and closed the door in game two on a 2.1 inning outing with two hits and striking out five batters to record the final seven outs of the ballgame to secure the series win.
Byrd delivered 6.0 scoreless innings across two appearances against Power 4 opponents, allowing just two hits and four total baserunners while striking out three. He opened the week with 4.0 hitless innings of relief against Michigan State, striking out three of the 14 batters he faced as the Eagles went on to beat the Spartans. Byrd then added 2.0 scoreless innings against No. 7 Auburn. He finished the week with a 0.67 WHIP while holding opposing hitters to a .105 batting average.
