Big South Announces Softball Players of the Week - March 16

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) –- Gardner-Webb infielder Maggie Knight (Robbinsville, N.C.) has been named the Big South Softball Player of the Week, while Radford’s Morgan Cooper (Man, W.Va.) is the Pitcher of the Week honoree for games played March 9-15, it was announced today.  In addition, Radford outfielder Peyton Simmons (Glen Allen, Va.) is the Freshman of the Week recipient.
 
Knight helped the Runnin’ Bulldogs to a perfect 5-0 week and Big South sweep of Charleston Southern with a .545 batting average, .636 slugging percentage and .688 on-base average.  She recorded six hits, scored four runs, had six RBI, one double and five walks in 16 plate appearances.  Knight was 3-for-3 with two RBI in the opener of the CSU series, went 2-3 and plated three runs in game two, and walked and scored in the finale.
 
Cooper was 2-0 with a 1.05 earned run average to help the Highlanders pick up wins in each of her appearances against Campbell and Lafayette, as she allowed just five hits and two earned runs with nine strikeouts over 13.1 innings of work.  She first worked in relief against Campbell where she tossed five scoreless innings and permitted just two hits as Radford came back for a 3-2 win.  Cooper followed with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in a win over Lafayette, and then finished the weekend with a dominant complete game victory over Lafayette in which she scattered three hits, struck out five, and retired 11 straight batters in a 9-2 win. 
 
Simmons hit .583 (7-12) and posted a .615 on-base percentage in four of Radford’s wins last week.  She tallied a hit in each appearance -- including three multi-hit efforts, and scored the deciding run in the Highlanders’ 2-1 victory over East Tennessee State.  Simmons also scored twice and tallied an RBI in an 8-3 win over Lafayette.
 
Also nominated for Player of the Week: Sophia Knock (Longwood), Cierra Grice (Presbyterian), Amber Wolfe (Radford) and Annelisa Winebarger (Winthrop).
 
Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week: Alli Stidham (Gardner-Webb), Morgan Strickland (Longwood), Peyton Duncan (Presbyterian) and Maddie Drerup (USC Upstate).
 
Also nominated for Freshman of the Week: Glenna McLamb (Gardner-Webb), Ava Abromavage (Longwood), Hali Duke (Presbyterian), Alyssa Davenport (USC Upstate) and Rebecca Amos (Winthrop).
