Big South Announces Women's Lacrosse Players of the Week - March 17

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com– Furman attacker Allie Kandel (Wilbraham, Mass.) has been named the Big South Women’s Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week, while Presbyterian College defender Avery West (Keller, Texas) is the Defensive Player of the Week for games played March 9-15, it was announced today. In addition, Gardner-Webb midfielder Maddie Tredway (Alpharetta, Ga.) has been named the Freshman of the Week.
 
Kandel tallied 13 goals, nine draw controls and three ground balls while setting a pair of career highs in two games for Furman. She placed 14 of her 17 shots on goal (.824), went 2-for-2 on free-position attempts and added one caused turnover. After going without a goal in her first six games this season, Kandel broke out with a career-high seven goals on 10 shots in the Paladins’ 21-20 last-second win over UMass Lowell. Six of her scores were unassisted, while her seven goals tied for the fourth-most in a single game in program history. The junior followed with a six-goal performance against Quinnipiac and established a new career high with eight draw controls.
 
West recorded season highs with three caused turnovers and six ground balls in Presbyterian’s 13-12 win over Manhattan. She finished the week with four caused turnovers and seven ground balls in two games. The senior anchored a defensive effort that held the Jaspers scoreless over the final 11:37 of the fourth quarter as the Blue Hose rallied from a one-goal deficit to secure a victory in the team’s non-conference finale. Her six ground balls were also a game high. Earlier in the week, West added one caused turnover and one ground ball against Merrimack.
 
Tredway broke the Big South single-game record with 18 draw controls against Quinnipiac. She finished the week with 26 draw controls, four goals and two ground balls in two games for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The freshman midfielder set new school and conference marks by winning 18 of the game’s 25 draws, surpassing the previous league record of 16. She also recorded a hat trick with three goals on five shots. Earlier in the week, Tredway scored one goal and added eight draw controls against Butler. She collected one ground ball in each contest.
